Prayer / Worship
Times of prayer are a regular feature of life at Worth. There are morning and evening prayers in the Houses and each House will have one of their weekly times of prayer in the Abbey Church.
As well as whole House prayers, each House has a weekly voluntary lectio divina group for those who wish to spend more time in prayerful reflection.
Outside the House structure, there are also opportunities to join a Subiaco prayer group and there is also a rosary group.
In his Rule, St Benedict puts a great deal of emphasis on worship: "Prefer nothing to the Work of God". The School, therefore, identifies worship as one of the Benedictine values which form the life of the School community. In practice, the whole community (pupils, staff and monastic chaplains) meet together each week on Wednesday afternoon in the Abbey Church.
Our Vision is to provide every student and staff member with an opportunity to encounter Jesus Christ. We aspire to achieve this through a cycle of worship experiences which unpack a theme over three weeks: For example:
- Week 1: the theme is proclaimed through a visiting speaker;
- Week 2: the theme is prayed through a monastic-style Taizé prayer service;
- Week 3: the theme is celebrated through the Mass or Benediction.
There is also a Family Mass at the start of each term.
The choir enhances all our liturgical celebrations – and many of the pupils act as altar servers and readers. Often at these evening prayers a group of students will take a theme and share their reflection on that with the whole community.
