As a department, we encourage and support our students to produce work that they never knew they were capable of achieving. Our one-to-one teaching programmes help to build confident, creative students, who become personally engaged with their studies and independently direct their creative journeys.
We pride ourselves on being a forward-thinking art department, embracing new technologies and combining them with traditional techniques. Drawing underpins all creative processes at Worth and to refine this skill we provide projects throughout the key stages that introduce students to a wide range of drawing techniques and media.
For both IB and A Level students, we offer one life-drawing class every week which is compulsory. In these sessions, students learn measured academic drawing as well as other experimental drawing techniques.
The department follows a Fine Art Syllabus and Photography is studied at both A Level and GCSE. One of our strengths is 3D sculpture and installation-based work, which makes us unique from other art departments. The pupils who choose this discipline are encouraged to make large scale sculptures in a variety of materials using techniques such as construction, modelling and casting. There is an impressive Photography darkroom, while Design and Technology was added to the syllabus in 2017-18.
The creative atmosphere generated in the senior art studios presents a very different learning environment for a Worth student. To support this, the department runs an open door policy, offering both time and space for students to explore their ideas and experiment with materials. Both the working environment and teaching experience offered encourages each student to communicate and share his or her identity through the use of visual language. Students are exploring their personal creative journeys, facilitated through the work they produce.
In the past, pupils have gone on to study a variety of creative courses such as architecture, fashion, art history and art foundation courses.
The Art department staff are experts in a variety of specialisms, giving the department a rich and broad technical and contextual knowledge base from which each student benefits. Our teachers keep up to date with the current European art scene and are encouraged to consistently practise their own work.
The end-of-year shows are a celebration of every student's creative achievements and the pupils' progress throughout the year is regularly documented via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and school publications.
