Worth School

We were delighted last week to welcome David Cannon, the world’s leading golf photographer, on to campus to give some of our students a masterclass in photography before presenting the prizes in our annual Photo of the Year competition.

David took a group of keen photographers on to the golf course at Worth to give them some tips about how to take expert photographs, particularly using longer lenses.

The party then gathered in the Photography studios at Worth where trophies were presented for our Photo of the Year competition. The School runs a monthly competition to showcase the talents of students and each monthly winner was put forward to the final, where a first, second and third was chosen by a panel of five professional photographers, each with many years of experience in the business.

Congratulations to Matthew Laird who was named the overall Photo of the Year winner.

There was also a new award: the David Cannon Sports Photo of the Year, which has been introduced in David’s name to encourage students to develop their skills taking sports photographs. Congratulations to Natalie, the inaugural winner of this trophy.

The afternoon was a great experience for students at Worth. Mr John Everest, Head of Photography, said: “It was a privilege to attend David Cannon’s masterclass – not just to experience the technical challenge of using his longer lenses and refining our timing and composition, but to witness his unmistakable love for the craft.

“Despite a career spent photographing the world’s greatest courses, his genuine excitement of the opportunities and backdrops presented on Worth’s golf course, seeing each scenario and spot with fresh eyes, was both humbling and inspiring. His passion is contagious and it reminds you that the desire to shoot never fades when it is truly in your heart.”

We are very grateful to highly-respected photographers Simon Dack, Liz Finlayson, Ady Kerry, Sam Stephenson and Darren Cool for judging this year’s Photo of the Year.

Photography is a popular subject choice at Worth at both GCSE and A Level, as well as being offered through our activities programme.
