Students highlighted the strength of debating at Worth when they defeated a team of teachers to win Worth’s annual All Stars Debate in the Performing Arts Centre theatre last Friday.
This traditional finale to the debating season at Worth was another well-supported evening, enjoyed by lots of families in the audience and judged by alumni who had been prominent members of the Debating Society during their time at the School.
The staff team included Interim Head Ms Marisa Bosa, plus Mr Matt Doggett (Assistant Head, Sixth Form), Mrs Sarah Flint (Assistant Head, Head of Middle School) and Head of English Mrs Dawn Clubb, who leads debating at Worth.
An excellent evening of debating ensued, with the teachers as the government and students in opposition to the motion, ‘This house would restrict the use of protest if there is unreasonable disruption to the wider public’. After plenty of discussion among the judges, the students were declared winners.
The evening also raised money for the charity Movember, which students in the Debating Society had chosen.
Worth runs both a Senior and Junior Debating Society, and the School has enjoyed plenty of successes in recent times.
The benefits of taking part in debating include learning to construct logical arguments, enhanced critical thinking, improved public speaking, strengthened research abilities and developing teamwork skills.
