Year 12 A Level Politics and IB Global Politics students took part in an online Q&A session with Baroness Scott of Needham Market, a member of the House of Lords and former President of the Liberal Democrats.
The session gave students a unique opportunity to speak directly with an experienced parliamentarian and to explore how UK politics works in practice. During the course of the session, students asked a wide range of thoughtful and challenging questions, drawing on topics they have been studying in class.
Students asked Baroness Scott whether the Lords needs further reform, how it can remain relevant to younger generations and whether it should eventually become a fully elected chamber. She explained how the Lords scrutinises government legislation and described the importance of expertise and detailed debate in improving laws. Other questions explored her personal political experiences, including her time working in local government and how this shaped her understanding of community-level change.
The talk was arranged through the Learn with the Lords programme, which provides opportunities for students to interact with a member of the House of Lords.
Students found the session engaging and highly relevant to their studies, gaining valuable real-world perspectives.
