Student to perform at special concert

One of our musically talented Sixth Form students is currently organ scholar at St Nicholas Church, Worth, and she will be performing at a special concert to mark the 1,050th anniversary of the church.

Charlotte Wong, who is our Deputy Head Girl and the 2023 Worth Musician of the Year, gives up her free time to help with regular services at St Nicholas and has also started conducting the choir.

She will be one of three young people who will be performing at the anniversary concert at St Nicholas on Sunday 2 March at 4pm.

This is an incredible act of service by Charlotte to give up her time for others, something which we encourage our students to do.

Charlotte said: “The organ became my main instrumental study in Year 12 in hopes of serving my local church in Hong Kong and applying for organ scholarships at university. Under the instruction of Mr Dean, the Director of Music at Worth Abbey, and having such an accessible organ on site to practise, I reached a Grade 8 standard in a year, playing during full-school Wednesday Worships and our annual Requiem service.

“Across the summer of Year 12, I began playing at local churches, including St Nicholas Church, Worth. For the 2024-25 academic year, I have taken the post of their organ scholar, with responsibilities including singing, playing and conducting weekly rehearsals and Sunday services. I treasure this position not only because I can gain experience as an organist but also because I can use my gifts to serve the community.

“Recently, I had the opportunity to fully direct the choir in the rehearsal and Sunday service for the first time. It was truly an enriching experience to plan and teach the choir some new repertoire, as well as to prepare all the hymns and organ voluntaries.

“I look forward to serving the local community further with this recital (on 2 March), where I will play a variety of famous repertoire from Couperin to Bach to Karg-Elert. I hope to see you there!”

Please support Charlotte by attending the concert if you are able to. The concert will last about an hour. Entry is free but a suggested donation of £5 is welcome, with proceeds going to the organ fund.

St. Nicholas, also known as Worth Church, was founded in 975AD.
