Student becomes Sussex fencing champion

Worth School

Congratulations to Worth student Kent Kubo who has become Sussex sabre fencing champion and will now see his name on the fencing honours board at the School.

Kent took part in the recent Sussex championships at the Triangle Leisure Centre in Burgess Hill and emerged triumphant in the sabre category from a field of 18 fencers.

Fencing has a rich history at Worth, where it is offered as a co-curricular activity. Two former students, Nick Bell and Tim Belson, went on to compete at the Olympics in the 1970s and 1980s and both appear on the honours board at the School which lists various achievements.

Kent, who has been fencing for eight years and previously won a national age group competition in Japan, will now see his name added to that list. He said: “My goal was to be on the board in Gym 1 (where fencing takes place at Worth). I am happy.”

Earlier this year Kent finished 13th at the Public Schools’ Championships while representing Worth.

Well done Kent on this fantastic achievement.
