One of our Sixth Form students has been interviewed on national television in his native Poland about an exciting project he has been working on with friends to build an atmospheric microsatellite.

Michal Mueller and friends have been working hard on this project for a European Space Agency-organised CanSat competition, which provides students with the opportunity to have practical experience working on a small-scale space project. For the competition, entrants are tasked with designing and building their own simulation of a real satellite.

Michal’s entry has caught the attention of a number of media outlets in Poland. He said: “We had the pleasure of discussing our project in an interview on Polish national television. Our first appearance was on TVP 3 Szczecin (a regional station), followed by a broadcast on all TVP 3 regional channels across Poland. Eventually, we were featured on TVP Info, the national news channel.

“Our satellite is designed to maximize energy conversion during descent. To achieve this, we use a rotational parachute equipped with blades attached to the CanSat’s body that generate power to charge a supercapacitor. Additionally, our CanSat measures temperature and atmospheric pressure in real time, transmitting data to our ground station every second. If we qualify for the national finals, our satellite will be launched from a rocket and will descend from approximately 1.5-2 km.”

This is hugely impressive work from Michal and his friends, and we wish them every success in the competition.
