Speech Day 2024

Wed, May 29th, 2024
Worth School

Speech Day 2024 was a wonderful celebration of the academic year and a chance to bid farewell to our Year 13 leavers.

One of the ‘Three Peaks of Worth’, along with our September Welcome Festival and Christmas Cheer, the day was its usual mixture of formal celebrations in the morning and informal festivities and fun in the afternoon, including picnics on the front lawns, bathed in glorious sunshine.

The day began with speeches and prize-giving in the Abbey Church and this year our guest speaker was Baroness Sheila Hollins, a crossbench peer and professional psychiatrist who last November was appointed as the new president of the Catholic Union. Outgoing Head Boy Guilhem de Lassus and Head Girl Gigi Dunbar Johnson also delivered excellent speeches after Head Master Mr Stuart McPherson had opened proceedings.

This period of the day also included the presentation of academic prizes to Year 13 students and the award of ties to students attaining prefect roles for the 2024-25 academic year.

After coffee in a marquee on the Front Quad, there was Family Mass at noon. Then in the afternoon, families were able to enjoy picnics or food purchased from any of a number of stalls. There were Art and Design and Technology exhibitions to visit, a student-led fundraising stall for the charity Mary’s Meals and this year the annual Summer Concert was incorporated into Speech Day afternoon.

Thank you to all families for joining us and making it a special day.

Here is a selection of pictures from the day taken by professional photographer Darren Cool. More pictures from the day will be shared in due course, including separate news items on the Summer Concert, the presentation of prizes and the new prefects.
