Year 7 History pupils brought learning to life when they held an election campaign for the Crisis of Succession in 1066.

The pupils put forward the credentials of the four claimants to the throne following the death of Edward the Confessor. Pupils will then study the significance of the Battle of Hastings and the resulting Norman conquest in the coming weeks.

In a fun lesson last week, they worked in groups to assert the rights to the throne of the four key contenders: Edgar the Atheling, Harold Godwinson, Harald Hardrada and William of Normandy. The groups had five minutes to appeal to voters in a variety of ways, including speeches, songs, raps, posters and placards. They also each brought in a cake to show the panel of judges who then awarded prizes for the best presentations.

The children clearly enjoyed the event and produced some excellent work while also showcasing good subject knowledge.
