Pupil-led conferences are a success

Congratulations to our Year 7s and 8s for their pupil-led conferences, which were held over two weeks this month. It was a fantastic learning-focused atmosphere, with pupils presenting their portfolios of work to their parents.

A new initiative this year, each pupil sat with their parent(s) and talked through their work this year, showing work examples, sharing goals, reflections, strengths and areas for improvement. The process of planning and putting the portfolio together, along with leading a conference on their learning, enabled the pupils to take responsibility for and ownership of their learning and made their learning more visible to parents.

This is the first time we have held pupil-led conferences at Worth and the initiative proved to be very successful with pupils enjoying the opportunity to develop their metacognitive skills, while parents liked the new format.

One parent said: “Many thanks again for the very successful evening last Wednesday. I think it was extremely helpful for both parent and child to be able to chat about our child’s progress and aims. A very good exercise!”

Another said: “I just wanted to let you know that XX and I loved the evening and thought it was such a positive experience – for children and parents. It’s not easy to think about your targets and have measurable goals, but it is so important to develop those skills. XX learnt to set smaller more attainable goals – a lesson I only learnt recently.”

The pupils celebrated what they had done with a specially made cake.
