Olympian making positive impact

Worth School

Our double Olympian sports coach Mr Calum Giles is having a positive impact on hockey at Worth.

Our 1st XI boys’ team made it five wins out of six this term with a 5-0 win at home to Radnor House Sevenoaks on Thursday, despite missing a number of regular 1st XI players due to mock exams which meant several 2nd XI players got the chance to play alongside two of our 1st XI girls. A Year 9 pupil continued in goal after a number of impressive performances.

The team’s only defeat so far this term came in the National Cup. Two of the subsequent five wins have come in the National Plate which means Worth is through to the third round.

Mr Giles, who represented Great Britain at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and the 2000 Games in Sydney, is now in his second academic year at Worth. The 1st XI boys won seven games out of 12 in 2023-24, which was the most wins in a term since boys’ hockey was introduced at the School in 2016-17 and continued the all-round year-on-year improvement.

Worth now runs 21 girls’ and boys’ representative teams from U13 to 1st XI. As well as expert coaching from Mr Giles, we also offer specialist goalkeeper coaching thanks to graduate sports assistant Mr Thomas Brocklehurst, an experienced hockey goalkeeper and coach.

Earlier this academic year 2024 Year 13 leaver and former girls’ 1st XI captain Emma Wood signed a contract to play the highest level of hockey in America with the University of California, Davis, where she will play alongside her academic studies.
