A listening ear, someone to chat with, a person to share a laugh with – Angela Mutongerwa is happy to be all of that in her role as one of the Forerunners at Worth.

The Forerunners team is a community of young adults who provide vibrant and engaging youth ministry to our pupils. Angela, who joined Worth last September, is the community leader within the team, looking after the community pastorally and on a day-to-day basis.

It is a role she enjoys but it is her work with the wider Worth community and specifically supporting the pupils which really inspires Angela.

A qualified nurse, born in Zimbabwe, Angela said: “We recognise that there are so many pressures and stresses of the world. As Forerunners we want to be a haven, a place where pupils are free to be themselves, to talk about life but also an escape from schoolwork and stress. Sometimes they just want to have a cup of tea, have a laugh, talk about the weather, talk about the football match they had at the weekend, anything they enjoy that in that moment that is not inducing any stress, pressure, or anxiety.

“The support we offer is inclusive, everyone is welcome. We are also attached to Houses in which we invest by supporting events like Live Lounge and sport matches. This allows us to have conversations with most students through shared interest regardless of their religious backgrounds.”

Having graduated from Birmingham University, Angela worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for a year as a haematology nurse. However, it was a mission year spent in Ireland between those two experiences that directed her on a path to Worth.

She said: “It was a very fascinating and formative time in Ireland. I grew spiritually, and the desire and my willingness to come here to Worth came from those experiences where I was with other young people, living in community, evangelising to young people about the good news, how to live out the gospel. The experience made the decision to come to Worth easier as I got to be part of the mission team.

“Worth is incredibly unique in the way it is structured and the system that we have in the Chaplaincy is like nowhere else in this country. When I first came here, I thought it would be great to be part of something which is so unique, and I knew the work the Chaplaincy do has profound impact.”
