With the editorial team of our student-led magazine Identity working on the 2026 publication, it seems an appropriate moment to reflect on the number of Identity team members who have gone on to make a name for themselves in the national and international media world.
Identity has been running since April 1996 and students are currently preparing the 53rd edition. Offering an eclectic mix of student-written articles, essays and artwork, the magazine has given voice to generations of young writers, exploring the issues that matter most to them.
Among them is former Head of St Bede’s Ishmael Soriano, who is now working for the BBC, something he attributes to having been editor of Identity in 2015.
To name a few others: Daniel Hyde is a deputy editor of The Daily Mail on Sunday, James Longman is the ABC foreign correspondent and Joshi Hermann is reinventing online the concept of the local newspaper.
Just a few months ago, a former Identity editorial team member, Lucy Whitehouse, was awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours List for services to teenage education. Lucy was actively involved in Identity magazine while at Worth and believes her work on that magazine was a great grounding in journalism and media that has influenced her career to date.
Identity is just another example of the opportunities Worth provides for students to get involved, to follow their passions or find new interests which can inspire their future career paths.
In assembly this week, this year’s editorial team were presented with Identity ties to mark their contribution to the magazine.
The next edition of Identity will be on sale at Speech Day on Saturday 23 May. An upcoming article on this website will talk about the articles in this year’s magazine.
