Lots of choice for weekend ahead

Wed, Nov 9th, 2022
Worth School

‘Time for fun, time for challenge, time for me.’ We asked our pupils what they wanted from our new weekends programme and they told us they wanted that balance of study, energetic activity and quiet time.

Another weekend full of opportunities, offering all those elements, lies ahead for our pupils this weekend, with highlights including an evening of House Drama, a movie night and an ice skating trip to Brighton.

The weekend begins with our latest talk in the Spencer Lecture Series at 5.30pm on Friday when Dr Patricia Scanlan will discuss the poetic muse in the modern world. These lectures have proved to be highly enriching. Then on Friday evening, we hold our inaugural House Drama competition with all nine senior Houses performing in front of their peers in a supporting environment in the PAC.

Our Saturday daytime programme allows pupils to opt for energetic activity or quiet time. For those wishing to spend time reinforcing their studies, independent study time has been built into the programme for all year groups from Year 9 to 13. There is also a GCSE Maths Support group, an IB CAS (creativity, activity, service) clinic and for those planning for life beyond Worth there is an Oxbridge preparation session and a UK and overseas university support carousel. There is also time for Art and Design independent study and a chance for Music scholars to practise instruments

Our activities programme this weekend includes clay target shooting, SCUBA diving, mountain biking, swimming, pilates, badminton, fitness sessions and Forest School.

For those who enjoy being part of a society, we have the Philosophy Society, Principles and Ethics of Medical Research, The Vesalius Society for those interested in biology, Worth News Video and Young Reporter, Worth Science Journal and Genealogy Club.

As well as a programme of rugby and hockey fixtures (see below), there is also an opportunity to volunteer in charity shops locally and a mindfulness session for girls.

On Saturday evening, pupils in all Houses are invited to a movie night in the PAC, which has been organised by St Bede’s House. The film being shown will be Top Gun: Maverick and a pizza van will be present at the interval for those interested.

Another exciting trip has been planned for Sunday when pupils can go on an ice skating outing to Brighton, then the weekend closes with Mass in the Abbey Church at 8pm.

Our weekends programme is open to both boarders and day pupils and underlines our commitment to being a 7-day-a-week boarding school.
