Well done to our senior debating team who finished third out of 12 schools competing in the regional round of the annual Ethics Cup competition.
Worth was one of only two schools to emerge from the morning rounds with a perfect record from two debates to claim a semi-final place, the other being Christ’s Hospital. However, we missed out on a place in the final by an extremely narrow margin to hosts Caterham School.
That left Worth with a third/fourth place play-off debate against Christ’s Hospital, who had also been eliminated. Our team discussed, ‘A Monthly Subscription to Brutality’ – a debate about true crime shows and how they present a moral dilemma – and won the debate to claim third place overall for a second successive year.
Worth won the Ethics Cup in 2022, triumphing in the national final at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. It was not to be this year but it was another impressive showing from our students.
A busy term lies ahead for debating at Worth. Next week the senior debating society competes in the second round of the English-Speaking Union MACE competition while later this month we will be taking part in the annual Oxford Schools Debating Competition.
Through our co-curricular programme, we offer a debating society for students of all ages in the School.
