IB Biology field trip to Devon

A group of Year 12 IB Biology students went to Devon last weekend for an intense few days designed to help them with their Independent Scientific Investigation, which contributes 20% towards their final grade.

The students went to Slapton Sands where they became immersed in various habitats including a shingle ridge, woodlands and a stream. While in the field, they learnt about succession, the native species and their relationships. They then used the information to plan their own investigations.

While on the trip, they also learnt analysis skills to help them process their data. As a little light relief after a hard day’s work, the group enjoyed a couple of walks. The first was to the beach where they built a bonfire and had smores. Whilst there, a seal paid a visit and the group saw biology in action with it catching and wrestling an eel.

On another evening, they walked to Torcross to see the recovered second world war tank that was sunk by the Germans during Normandy day landings practice, which meant they got to have a little history lesson too.

The trip was extremely helpful for the students.
