The House Debating competition proved to be one of the highlights of the term with Farwell edging out St Mary’s by a single point in a keenly contented final.
All eight speakers were excellent, speaking eloquently and with confidence on the motion: ‘This house agrees with Elon Musk’s assertion that the colonisation of Mars is imperative for the survival of the human race’. A limited number of spectators, either in bubbles or socially distanced, were allowed into the Whitehead Room which made for a superb atmosphere. While Farwell were able to lift the trophy at the end of the season, St Mary’s had the top speaker with 77 out of 80 points.
The Debating Society, which has been resurrected this academic year after a hiatus of a couple of years, is one of the many academic enrichment and co-curricular opportunities available at Worth. All 10 Houses entered teams into the House competition and Head of English, Mrs Dawn Clubb, was delighted with the high level of involvement. She said: “This has been one of the highlights of the term. It has been so exciting to see so many students involved and I am looking forward to both the competitive season and the House Debating Competition again next year.”
Among the benefits of joining the Debating Society at Worth are learning presentation skills through effective speech composition and delivery, structure and organising thoughts, improving critical thinking, listening, teamwork and improving confidence.
