Hockey flourishing at Worth

Hockey is flourishing at Worth with our boys’ 1st XI enjoying an excellent season so far under new Head of Hockey and double Olympian Mr Calum Giles.

The boys have a record of five wins from seven fixtures this term, including winning 8-0 against Radnor House Sevenoaks and 7-2 versus St John’s School Leatherhead in their two matches immediately before half term.

Mr Giles joined Worth last summer following a glittering playing career and with an excellent reputation for coaching. As a player he featured at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and the 2000 Games in Sydney, winning 143 caps for England and Great Britain and scoring 110 international goals.

In the Autumn Term, our girls showed the benefits of working with Mr Giles, winning nine and drawing two of their 13 fixtures.

Worth has 23 representative hockey teams and enjoys a link-up with the multi-successful East Grinstead Hockey Club, who are one of the leading clubs in the country.

As well as a number of our students playing for East Grinstead, the School is proud to sponsor the ladies’ 1st XI who last weekend were crowned national indoor champions, becoming the first team since 2012-13 to hold the domestic outdoor and indoor Premier League titles at the same time. This was despite being without seven senior internationals. What an achievement!

Two of these pictures, from professional photographer Eva Gilbert last weekend, show the Worth logo on the East Grinstead ladies’ 1st XI team shirts. The other pictures show Mr Giles coaching at Worth and our boys’ 1st XI during a recent fixture.
