A high-quality debating final

Worth School

Students in Farwell and Rutherford Houses produced a high-quality debate as the second annual House Debating Cup reached a conclusion.

All 10 Houses have participated in this year’s competition, with great support from fellow students in each round, and the standard has been excellent throughout.

The final was judged by Mrs Brenda Alleyne, solicitor of Alexander Green Group, Dr Bridget Dolan, QC of Serjeants’ Inn, and Head Master Mr Stuart McPherson. The judges were particularly impressed with how Farwell and Rutherford debated the motion for the grand final which was: ‘Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy’ – a Tweet by Elon Musk. This house agrees with these words. Rutherford House was the Government with Farwell in opposition.

Last year’s champions Farwell won the debate and, therefore, retained their title. The debate was lively with interesting arguments and sparky points of order on both sides.  All speakers spoke incredibly well after 15 minutes of preparation.

Congratulations to Farwell but well done too to Rutherford and all students who have represented their House in their competition this year.
