Gold, Silver and Bronze awards presented

It was wonderful this week to see so many students receiving certificates for completing their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards.

In assembly on Monday, Head Master Mr Stuart McPherson handed out certificates to a large number of students, including five who have completed their Gold Award. While the Gold Award is usually started in Year 12, it is often not completed until the end of Year 13 at the earliest, so for these students to have done so already is a tremendous achievement.

These five will now go to Buckingham Palace in May to formally receive their awards from a member of the Royal Family.

Worth School is extremely proud of its long association as a Licensed Centre with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The Award contains four elements which help shape individuals: volunteering, a physical activity, acquiring skills and undertaking an expedition.

Mr Julian Williams, Deputy Head (Co-Curricular and Partnerships), who has led the DofE at Worth for many years, said: “It is not an exaggeration to state that the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award changes young people’s lives. It provides innumerable benefits, skills, confidence, builds self-esteem and many other important qualities, but most importantly it sets our young people on a path for life.”

Tomorrow almost 40 students will be taking part in this year’s DofE Silver Practice Expedition on Ashdown Forest, while next week there will be a Gold Practice Expedition on Dartmoor.

Pictured are some but not all of the award winners in assembly.
