Former Head Boy to captain GB at Tokyo Olympics

Five years after leading his nation to a silver medal in Rio, former Worth School Head Boy Tom Mitchell will again captain the Great Britain rugby sevens squad at this summer’s Tokyo Olympics.

It will be another proud moment for Tom who first honed his rugby skills at Worth and has since gone on to enjoy a distinguished career. Having previously captained England Students and Great Britain students in the 15-a-side game, he has flourished since deciding to concentrate on sevens, winning a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016, a bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018 and a silver at the World Cup Sevens in San Francisco.

The men’s competition at the Tokyo Olympics will take place from 26-28 July and Tom, now 31, will captain a 12-man squad which includes four players who competed in Rio. At one stage it looked like Great Britain would not be able to send men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams to Japan but it has been made possible thanks to an innovative partnership with The National Lottery.

Tom’s father Alan coached rugby at Worth for many years and still works at the school.
