Farwell

Farwell House is a day house for boys aged 13 to 18 years old. When choosing your son’s House, every parent has a unique set of priorities and expectations. Our aim is to ensure that all students are given the best pastoral care to support their academic progress.

The House motto ‘Per Angusta ad Augusta’ translated to ‘Through difficulties to honours’ supports the idea that ‘Nothing worth having was ever achieved without effort’. But what does this mean in Farwell House? First and foremost, we teach the importance of respect for others, good manners, kindness and honesty. Through a careful balance of challenge and support, we help students develop their joy of learning and the confidence to try something new. In addition, we hope students learn to become independent in thought and action. Most importantly, students are encouraged to always give of their best and to believe that they can make a difference in the world. 

Mr Paul Cheeseman (pictured) is Housemaster, taking up the position from the start of the 2024-25 academic year. Mr Cheeseman was born and raised in Sussex, and attended the University of Bristol to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Product Design in 2011. After establishing Worth’s successful Design and Technology department in 2016, he has worked in a variety of pastoral roles across both boarding and day houses. He has had a passion for student wellbeing since a young age, having volunteered to help look after at-risk children during summer holidays before starting university. Mr Cheeseman is delighted to be able to guide and inspire the young minds of Farwell House as they grow and develop.

Mr James Kemp is Assistant Housemaster, having previously been Head of House when he was a student at the School, while Matron Pallavi Hodgson completes the pastoral team. The House also has a very experienced tutor team including Mr David Marshall (Year 9), Mr Kemp (Year 10), Mrs Sarah Glanville (Year 11), Mr Jonathan Bindloss (Year 12) and Mr William Warwick (Year 13).

Farwell House aims to continue the finest traditions of Abbot Farwell with great emphasis on the three Cs – care, compassion and commitment – as its underlying ethos.
