Environmentalist and inspirational speaker Nicola Peel was at Worth last Friday evening to deliver a hugely engaging talk to students, parents and the wider Worth community.
The event was collaboratively organised between the student-led Worth Environmental Society, Worth Abbey Parish and Friends of Worth.
Nicola has spent more than 20 years working in the Ecuadorean Amazon and has initiated several projects such as cleaning oil spills with fungi, building water systems for indigenous families and preventing deforestation through teaching agroforestry. She is determined to inspire others to make a difference in the world.
The underlying theme of Nicola’s talk at Worth last Friday was the power of biomimicry and innovation in nature. Biomimicry is a practice that learns from and mimics the strategies used by living organisms to solve challenges comparable to the ones we face as individuals and societies. The benefit is that nature presents us with many strategies far better at working harmoniously with the rest of nature than many human developed strategies have been. The goal then is to create products, processes, and systems that solve our greatest design challenges sustainably and in harmony with all life on earth.
Thank you to everyone who attended the talk last Friday.
