Drama scholar's huge achievement

Many congratulations to one of our Drama scholars who has won a place in the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain.

Year 10 pupil Will Tarpey won through two rounds of auditions to secure a place with a prestigious organisation which has built a reputation for producing actors such as Helen Mirren, Ian McShane, Kate Winslet, Ben Kingsley, Colin Firth, Rosamund Pike, Idris Elba, Daniel Craig and Daniel Day-Lewis.

The first round of auditions involved Will submitting a self-tape of a monologue which he wrote himself as part of a competition run by Head of Drama at Worth, Mrs Natalie Lynch. He then progressed to an in-person audition where he performed another monologue as well as talking to the judging panel about his journey to that point.

Being part of the National Youth Theatre will provide marvellous opportunities for Will, whose dream is to become an actor. In the summer he will attend a two-week summer intake course. He explained: “It involves intensive acting for two weeks. After you have done that you become a full-time member which means you can be in productions they put on and also they put you up for external casting. You will also do their workshops and masterclasses.

“It is a wonderful opportunity. They have contacts and it looks very good on your CV for a drama school later on. It is also very good to be part of a community like that, full of people who are doing the same thing as you and want to go on to be actors. I couldn’t believe it when I heard I had got in because I was expecting to have to try a few times.”

Will was in the recent Worth production of Medea. He added: “It is really great to be part of the productions we put on here. It keeps me active and used to being on stage. It is all good experience.”
