Design and Technology is one of the most creative, ever-changing, forward thinking, problem solving, thought provoking and fun subjects at school.

It combines the best elements of Art, Science, Maths and ICT to create a subject which society cannot live without. The objects we buy, the products we use, the buildings we live in, the food that we eat, the clothes that we wear and the things that we read all have a direct connection and origins within Design and Technology.

Design and Technology is a fundamental subject for all students, as it equips them with vital skills needed to navigate life. Problem solving abilities, development of research and analytical skills, eye-hand coordination and the ability to change one’s environment are just a few of the benefits this subject provides.

In KS3, the subject is compulsory and the tailored curriculum we offer introduces the learners to a range of practical and theoretical skills and knowledge, whilst producing a selection of outcomes. It also offers an insight into potential career opportunities. The development of design skills and the ability to visualise new ideas can be useful in many job families such as marketing, sales and advertising, creative professions such as product, graphic and furniture design, architecture, engineering, interior design, the field of computer gaming design and web design to name but a few.

GCSE DESIGN AND TECHNOOGY

Pupils can choose to continue to study Design and Technology at GCSE. At Worth, the specific area studied is Resistant Materials. From the start of Year 10, skill levels quickly rise as students embark on making a small tall table and produce a range of smaller practical outcomes. These reinforce the basic skills and knowledge needed, and creates a strong foundation to embark on their major project, which is a year-long ‘design and make’ task in which the pupils must identify a design need and create a solution. Pupils follow independent paths and are welcome to choose sizeable and ambitious challenges. Again, quality and durability are core values, and the final outcomes are impressive.

At the heart of their studies is the process of making and for a great many pupils this is the most enjoyable aspect of the subject. However, throughout the course, at all levels, practical work is embraced and reinforced with theory lessons. The GCSE course also includes a theory exam which the pupils prepare for through focused weekly theory lessons throughout Year 10 and Year 11.

Students who opt for GCSE Design and Technology will follow the AQA specifications: 50% portfolio coursework including the practical and 50% examination. The exam last for two hours and covers a breadth of design disciplines. 

At the end of the GCSE course, the practical outcomes will be displayed in an exhibition to showcase the fine work the students have produced.

The Design and Technology staff have many years of teaching experience and use their own industrial experiences to support and underpin the techniques and knowledge offered to the students.

A2 LEVEL DESIGN AND TECHNOOGY

We are a new department, so A Level Design and Technology is not offered at present, but we are considering offering this for the 2020-21 academic year depending upon demand.
