Eight members of Worth’s Senior Debating Society performed admirably when they competed in the regional round of the Oxford Schools’ Debating Competition on Thursday.

This was the first time Worth had fielded teams in this competition which is organised as a short-prep British Parliamentary Debate format. Each of the four teams were assigned their position and the motions were announced just 15 minutes prior to the debate beginning. This year’s competition was online which added an element of difficulty to this already challenging debate format.

Each team had to debate twice on two different motions and in two different roles. Worth’s four teams competed extremely well, delivering both thoughtful and heartfelt speeches on the two motions: ‘This house would grant all 18 – 35-year-olds two votes in elections’; and ‘This house would prohibit the use of images of suffering in all advertising for charity campaigns’.

There were 44 teams competing in this regional heat, with only seven going forward to the finals which will be held in the Oxford Union. None of our teams qualified but the students will have gained a huge amount of experience and expertise which will hold them in good stead both in forthcoming competitions and in the future.
