A team of young debaters performed superbly while representing Worth at the Cambridge Schools’ Debating Competition last weekend.

This was the first time Worth had competed in this event which is organised annually by the Cambridge Union, the oldest debating society in the world.

The competition itself is considered one of the most prestigious on the debating calendar and, with Worth also competing in the regional final of the Youth Speaks debating competition last weekend, this was a great opportunity for some of our young, less experienced debaters who formed the bulk of a team of eight from Worth.

Taking place at Ibstock Place School in London and with a lot of the London schools represented, the competition was the same format as the Oxford Schools’ competition with our students working in pairs and put into teams of four with pairs from other schools.

It was an intense day with the students debating four times during the day. Although Worth did not progress to finals day, two of our teams came first in one of the debates, three of our teams came second in one of the debates and one of our Year 12 students finished 35th overall in the individual standings while competing in his first competition.

Head of English Mrs Dawn Clubb, who leads debating at Worth, said: “We didn’t go through but this was an incredible achievement by a team largely made up of young, less experienced debaters and I am very proud of them.”

Worth has a strong reputation for debating and won the Ethics Cup in 2022, triumphing in the national final at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

A Debating Society is offered through our co-curricular programme, with opportunities for all year groups. Among the benefits of joining the Debating Society are learning presentation skills through effective speech composition and delivery, structure and organising thoughts, improving critical thinking, listening, teamwork and improving confidence.
