Art day takes flight

Year 7 pupils enjoyed an unforgettable day organised by the Art department with a special visit from Huxley’s Birds of Prey Centre.

Pupils were thrilled as magnificent birds swept overhead during an exciting flying display. The visit offered incredible up close views, giving pupils the opportunity to photograph and sketch directly from life – a valuable experience and a rare chance to work from primary sources.

The session even had its comic moment when one adventurous bird decided to explore the rafters, proving once again the saying: never work with animals or children.

After the flying display, pupils met Topaz the owl, who quickly became a favourite. Every pupil enjoyed the unforgettable experience of holding Topaz during a supervised bird handling activity.

Following break, pupils returned to the Art department inspired and buzzing with ideas. Using their firsthand observations, sketches and photos, they began transforming the experience into a ceramic bird sculpture, developing a finished piece from real life study.

The day was filled with smiling faces, hands-on creativity and enthusiasm, highlighting the importance of working from life and turning direct experience into meaningful artwork. It was a day Year 7 will not soon forget.
