A trip to the Houses of Parliament gave Sixth Form Politics students a greater understanding of how the UK’s government works from the roles of the House of Commons and the House of Lords to the process of making laws.
Year 12 and 13 students had a full tour of the Parliament building including going inside both chambers. They also saw the Royal throne and the dressing room where King Charles III prepared for his coronation, as well as visiting Westminster Hall where Queen Elizabeth II lay in 2022.
During the day they saw a number of MPs and Members of the Lords and were able to understand how Parliament works, how voting works and the daily life in the House of Lords and Commons.
Afterwards students had a workshop where they held a snap election and were able to create their own political parties to help them understand the election process.
The trip concluded with some sightseeing, including Big Ben, Downing Street and the Cenotaph where wreaths had been laid at last Sunday’s Remembrance Service.
The experience allowed students to see and interact with these institutions first-hand, providing context to their classroom learning.
