General Chapter of EBC meets at Worth and new president is elected
The General Chapter of the English Benedictine Congregation has been meeting at Worth for the first time in more than 40 years.
The assembly concluded yesterday with Abbot Christopher Jamison being elected as Abbot President in succession to Abbot Richard Yeo.
The General Chapter is the assembly of the Abbots and Abbesses of the 13 independent monasteries of the English Congregation, together with community representatives of those monasteries. It meets every four years in an English Benedictine monastery, in the UK or the USA and the last time the body met at Worth Abbey was the 1970s.
Abbot Christoper was Abbot of Worth from 2002 to 2010 and since then has worked for the Bishops of England and Wales as Director of the National Office for Vocation. He first arrived as a monk at Worth in 1973 and worked in the School, becoming Head Master from 1994 to 2002. He came to public prominence in 2005 through the BBC TV series ‘The Monastery’, which involved five lay men with little or no experience of Christian monastic life sharing the life of the monks at Worth.
Many congratulations to Abbot Christopher.
